The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to avoid using the following prescription drug products that contain sildenafil, a nitric oxide donors in the U. S. market:
Alleged safety risks associated with sildenafil citrate, sold under the brand name Viagra, have been identified in a study and have been reported in a number of clinical trials. Sildenafil citrate is marketed by Eli Lilly, which also is marketing a generic version of the drug.
The study, published online November 8, found that those taking sildenafil citrate who consumed a large amount of the drug did not have an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
The Food and Drug Administration warns consumers to use the products as directed or if you have heart or blood vessel problems, such as heart attack or stroke. Sildenafil citrate is also sold under a generic name, Viagra, which has been recalled due to the safety risks.
“Sildenafil citrate has the potential to cause serious side effects that need medical attention right away,” the FDA said in its warning.
The study was part of a large clinical trial conducted at Eli Lilly’s New York Biomedical Research Center in June 2012. The study enrolled more than 400 patients. Those who took sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra, reported a lower risk of heart attack or stroke compared to those who did not.
In a separate study of sildenafil citrate users, the FDA said the company warned patients to avoid taking the drug for at least 48 hours after taking nitric oxide donors. Nitric oxide donors include sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra. Sildenafil citrate is also sold under the brand name Viagra by Eli Lilly.
The FDA has not issued a statement about the study, but it said the safety of sildenafil citrate has been established in a number of clinical trials. FDA officials did not return calls or messages seeking to receive them.
In June 2011, the FDA warned consumers about a number of possible safety risks associated with sildenafil citrate. Some of the more serious risks include the potential for an increased risk of stroke, a heart attack or stroke, or a blood vessel or blood clotting disorder such as thrombosis, angina, or high blood pressure.
